Popular Books I've Never Read, and Why

Starting with series ...
  • I've never read a single one of the Harry Potter series, and I don't suspect I ever will. I did see one movie once, but I couldn't tell you which one.
  • Game of Thrones - no interest at all. Got about 15-20 mins into an episode once, and couldn't figure out the cause for all the hype. As a TV series, Vikings was way more interesting and engrossing!
  • 50 Shades - ditto the no interest answer.
  • Twilight - I'm old enough to recall when the cool vampire stories were written by Anne Rice (none of which I read either) so when Twilight occurred I remember doing a distinctly old lady eye roll about the return of "that stupid vampire crap."
  • Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice - see above. Just never got the whole vampire thing.
  • Outlander - but I intend to! I started watching episode one during the fourth season of the show. I was so bored by the first 20-30 mins I paused it, left it for a few days, and almost didn't go back to it. On a whim I gave it a second chance. Once the timeline moved into the past I was hooked and binged all four seasons in time for the start of the fifth. Definitely want to read them all, eventually, though I do hear they are rather uncomfortably rapey (way more than the show).
  • The Hunger Games - didn't even know these existed until after a saw the first film. While I liked the films a lot, I don't anticipate ever reading the books. I downloaded a kindle sample of the first one and didn't gel with the writing style at all (not a fan of YA anyway).
  • Chronicles of Narnia - never much for fantasy.
  • Lord of the Rings -  ditto the fantasy apathy.
  • Handmaid's Tale - plan to read both The Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments, just haven't gotten around to them yet. Huge fan of the TV series, and all things Margaret Atwood.
  • Divergent - just doesn't grab me in terms of subject matter, never have been a fan of YA, and I missed seeing the movies also. Don't anticipate 'correcting' this anytime soon.
  • Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - heard there was some super violent stuff that is very important to the plot so I am in no way saying there's anything wrong about including it. And I am definitely NOT advocating censorship! But I can also totally live without having that stuck in my head, so I will take a pass, thank you.
  • Special mention: I am a huge fan of the British cop/crime/mystery TV series Vera, Shetland, and Case Histories - all based on different book series by Anne Cleeves and Kate Atkinson. I've also been greatly enjoying the STARZ series Dublin Murders based on Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series. I keep meaning to get all these books, but haven't done so yet. I'm still trying to catch up on reading Brian McGilloway's fantastic DS Lucy Black series (which no one has had the foresight to turn into a TV show yet).

Stand Alones ...
  • Perhaps popular doesn't apply so much here as the term classic does, but I have repeatedly tried to read Joyce's Ulysses and have never gotten more than 3 or 4 pages in before giving up. It gives me a headache every time.
  • Again, another classic, more than a popular read - War and Peace. I am a huge fan of Tolstoy and have read pretty much everything else he ever wrote, just never got around to this behemoth.
  • Gillian Flynn - have never read any of her books because I somehow just completely missed the whole Gone Girl thing, and when I tried to watch the Sharp Objects TV series I hated it. Perhaps I have missed out and I should give her writing a try - often times the like or dislike of a thing doesn't cover both the written and filmed version, but I'm OK with missing this boat for now.
  • The Girl on a Train - the blurb just didn't grab me, simple as.
  • One Hundred Years of Solitude - didn't get to it yet, but correcting this soon.
  • Slaughterhouse-Five - have actually somehow never read any Vonnegut, but correcting this soon.
  • The Catcher in the Rye - I think I've never read it, but I could be wrong. Either way, I'm going to read/re-read it soon.
I'm sure I'm forgetting tons. Tell me your list of 'nevers', or tell me your favorites (and why I'm missing out).

Planner Freebies - Hobonichi Weeks Cover Insert

In my search for the proverbial/mythical planner peace, I thought I might like a Hobonichi Weeks. Since it was Feb/Mar at the time, and I already had three other planners I was trying out, I decided to get an undated Fauxbonichi from Amazon for like $8.  Disliking the look of it, I bought a plastic cover and printed off the following insert based on a free dashboard design from Plan With Bee.  Click below to download/print my cover insert - just print it off, trim it down a bit, and insert in the plastic cover. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WnMe2wjLSlKTwuqtW9KL5CDTNRfd1TGZ/view?usp=sharing

Planner Freebies - Temp and Period Tracker

So, probably in order to try to tame the chaos of my life, I have been diving deep into the planning world lately. I've been planning for years, eons even, but it used to be strictly functional (which is a polite way of saying my planners were ugly - not that all functional planning is ugly, but MINE WAS).  I would quickly scribble down stuff to be done, with any implement I had on hand, and cross things out and move them around to the point of being indecipherable by anyone but (hopefully) me. All with the no nonsense goal to get it down, get it done, and move on. I never decorated any of them, nor did I keep them for any reason - at the end of the year they went in the trash. But I never found the perfect planner - one that could accommodate every area of my life. And I still have not, so far. Though I am starting to decorate it, journal in it, and plan to keep them from now on. I would love to have a gorgeous BuJo, but I cannot manage to force myself to keep one due to the time

You Are a Badass at Making Money - Review

You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth by Jen Sincero My rating: 3 of 5 stars The book was more focused on my emotional relationship to money than I expected. There were some assumptions about those attitudes which I didn’t feel applied, so I didn’t feel as connected to this book as the previous Badass. But there were still some really good points and strong takeaways. It reminded me to own what I want. View all my reviews
